Paris is one of Europe's great gay cities — Le Marais has been the centre of gravity for forty years, the sauna scene is legendary, and France has world-class public sexual health infrastructure that is free at the point of use, including for visitors. The scene is smaller and more concentrated than London or Berlin, which makes it easy to navigate.
The neighbourhoods
Le Marais (3rd & 4th arrondissements)
The historic heart. Rue des Archives, rue Vieille-du-Temple, rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie — the streets where gay Paris lives. Bars, cafés, shops, gyms, clinics, and a steady daytime cruise through the cafés. Walkable from Hôtel de Ville and Saint-Paul metros.
Pigalle & South Pigalle (9th)
Historically the city's red-light district, more recently a hipster bar area. Some sex clubs, a couple of saunas, and a louche, late-night feel.
Belleville & the 11th
The younger, more alternative queer scene — bars like La Mutinerie, parties at Le Tango, an art-school crowd. Less polish than Le Marais, more variety.
Bastille & Oberkampf
Mixed nightlife with strong queer presence; Le Dépôt is here, on the edge of the 3rd.
Bars
- Le Cox (Marais) — institution, packed apéro, spills onto the street.
- Open Café (Marais) — daytime café and evening bar, big terrace, see-and-be-seen.
- Freedj (Marais) — late opening, dance, cruisy.
- Raidd Bar (Marais) — famous for the shower show; touristy but fun.
- Le Duplex (Marais) — small, arty, mixed crowd, music-led.
- La Mutinerie (3rd) — queer-feminist bar, more lesbian/non-binary leaning, welcoming.
- Quetzal (Marais) — small, dark, cruisy, late.
- Le Tango / La Boîte à Frissons (3rd) — old-school bal musette by night, queer parties on weekends.
Clubs & nights
- Le Dépôt (3rd) — combined club and cruising labyrinth; the most famous in Paris. Open late every night.
- Gibus Club — long-running, hosts Inception and other gay nights.
- La Machine du Moulin Rouge — hosts queer parties including Mensch and others.
- Club Haussmann & Mix Club — circuit and themed gay nights.
- Inception, Crisco, Possession — roving party brands worth following on Instagram.
Saunas & sex clubs
Paris has one of Europe's best sauna scenes — clean, busy, central. Standard etiquette: shower first, towel always (off only in private cabins), no means no.
- Sun City (1st) — the largest, near Les Halles, multi-level, cinema, hammam, steam.
- Le Mykonos (3rd) — central Marais sauna, popular with locals.
- Key West (10th) — long-running, friendly.
- IDM (10th) — cruisier, mixed age.
- Le Riad & Le Bains d'Odessa — hammam-style, distinct atmosphere.
On the sex club / backroom side, Le Dépôt is the headline; smaller play spaces and naked nights run at venues across the Marais and Pigalle — check Recon and the venues' own listings. Outdoor cruising survives in the Tuileries, the Bois de Boulogne, and the Bois de Vincennes; activity is mostly after dark and stronger in summer.
Apps & online
- Grindr — dominant in Paris, especially central districts.
- Wapo / Wapa — strong European user base; many French men use it alongside Grindr.
- Scruff — bears and otters.
- Recon — kink and fetish, active Paris community.
- Hornet — meaningful French user base.
- Sniffies — growing, more cruising-focused.
Hosting in Paris
Parisian apartments are small. Most flats are studios or one-bedrooms with thin walls, neighbours close on every side, and a gardien(ne) (concierge) in older buildings who notices comings and goings.
- Building entry: most buildings have a code at the street door and an interior door; type both clearly into the message ("digicode 12B45, then second door right").
- Walk-ups: a "fifth floor with no lift" is common in the centre — say so before someone hauls themselves up.
- Short-term rentals: Paris has strict Airbnb rules (capped nights for primary residences, registered numbers for non-primary). Many flats prohibit guests beyond the booking.
- Hotels: the simplest hosting option for a visitor. Le Marais, Bastille, République, and Châtelet are all easy bases with metro access.
- Discretion: Paris is tolerant but apartments are thin-walled. Volume matters.
Meeting strangers safely
- Tell a friend the address and an expected check-in. Grindr's location share works in France.
- Ask for a face pic and a recent voice note before crossing the city. Catfishing is the most common nuisance, not the most dangerous.
- Meet at a café in the Marais if anything feels off. Five euros and twenty minutes weed out a lot.
- Watch your drink in clubs and don't accept drinks you didn't see poured.
- Trust your gut. Walk away if something is wrong — politeness costs more than the awkwardness.
Sexual health: PrEP, DoxyPEP, testing
France was the first country in the world to make PrEP fully reimbursed by national health insurance, and Parisian sexual health services are excellent and largely free at the point of use, including for visitors at the public CeGIDD clinics.
Le 190 (3rd arrondissement)
A community sexual health centre specifically for MSM and trans people — comprehensive testing, PrEP, DoxyPEP guidance, vaccinations, and a non-judgmental clinic culture. The flagship for gay sexual health in Paris.
Le Kiosque Infos Sida
Health information centre and free testing site near Hôtel de Ville. Quick, anonymous HIV tests and onward referral.
CeGIDD clinics
Free public centres for STI screening and HIV testing, found across each arrondissement. No insurance card needed, no appointment in many. A list is on the Paris city website.
PrEP
Free for residents through Assurance Maladie; available daily or 2-1-1 (on-demand). Visitors can access it through Le 190 or private clinics — costs are modest by international standards. The 2-1-1 protocol was developed in France through the IPERGAY trial.
DoxyPEP
France issued national recommendations for doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis in 2024 for MSM and trans women at high risk: 200mg within 72 hours of condomless sex. Available via Le 190, CeGIDDs, and primary care.
Vaccinations worth having
- Mpox — free at vaccination centres, two doses for eligible MSM.
- Hepatitis A & B.
- HPV — free for MSM up to age 26, recommended up to 45.
- Meningitis ACWY — discuss with the clinic.
Testing cadence
Standard recommendation for sexually active gay men in Paris is full screening every 3 months: HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea/chlamydia at all exposed sites. Le 190 and the CeGIDDs make this fast and free.
Chemsex — what to know
Chemsex (G/GHB, mephedrone, crystal meth) has a real footprint in Paris, especially in private flats and certain club afters. The risks are real: GHB has a narrow dose window and overdoses are common in emergency rooms; mixing G with alcohol is what kills people; meth is highly addictive.
Support and information is available — Le 190 has a chemsex consultation service, AIDES runs harm-reduction programmes, and Sida Info Service (0 800 840 800) is free, anonymous, and 24/7. If someone is unrousable or breathing slowly after G, call 15 (SAMU).
